Los Castillejos is a whitewashed Moorish hamlet clinging to the side of a hill, directly above a four kilometre expanse of shimmering turquoise water, in the Malaga region.
With its dramatic views across olive and almond groves that sweep down to Lake Viñuela and then rise 2,100 metres to the Sierra Tejeda mountains beyond, Los Castillejos is made up of fourteen properties, eight of which are currently used for rural tourism. The other properties include a staff house, attached to a seminar/dining room area, a large family home (Casa Los Golondrinas) and various store buildings and ruins. Other communal areas of the village include a swimming pool (12m x 5m), botanical gardens and communal terraces around the village. Separate from the village is a small house with 500m2 of land.
History
Originally a Moorish settlement built upon a ridge on the route between the castles of Zalia and Comares. Then after the reconquest owned by an administrator of the Catholic church, and in more recent times, after the civil war, occupied by smugglers (controbandistas). It was abandoned in the 1980s when the families moved up to the village of Los Romanes which had received mains water, sewage and electricity. In 1992 it was purchased by the present owner who commenced the labor of love with the renovation and letting of properties for rural tourism.
Originally converted in the early 1990s, Castillejos now is in need of some updating.
